Charlton Athletic 1 Sheffield Wednesday 1
An expectant crowd which included Tony Jimenez, Michael Slater, Steve Parish, Ian Moody, Tony Pulis and Roland Duchatelet were dished up a load of cold turkey yesterday at The Valley.
It was a disappointing result against a side in our ‘mini league.’ Beating Brighton was great, but for me turning draws into wins against Yeovil and Wednesday would have been a lot more valuable.
I was sat on an airplane for the whole game, and scrambling to find the score after landing in Bermuda took me back to the days when only next day’s newspaper or teletext would tell you the score. I’m not sure I like that instant gratification or disappointment.
Those witness to the whole 90 minutes probably felt I was fortunate not to have to sit through yesterday. Only one shot on target with Powell forced to break up a recently impressive back four. Solly considered not fit enough for two games in four days and Wiggins at home with his wife and a newborn baby.
What is harder to explain is why Powell broke up the midfield pairing of Stephens and Cousins, installing Jackson back into the middle and forcing Stephens out wide right. Jackson is still a very important cog for me, but I was disappointed to see Powell unsettle a good formula to accommodate him. Sadly the skipper may only excel in a five-man midfield at the moment.
The pitch looked like a pudding again and it was interesting to read Tony Pulis say that the condition of it will be a major disadvantage to us this season.
