Charlton Athletic 4 Oxford United 0

Well that was a nice turn up for the books. A Charlton cup win, and a good one at that.

Chris Powell put out a B team, but it sounded like it was an XI that was out to impress. These early League Cup matches are easily forgettable and this Cup doesn’t get remotely interesting until the 4th Round yet, with our cup history this was a result to put a smile on all of our faces.

Good to hear also of good performances from players such as Jordan Cook, who faces a big season as well as Ceddy Evina, Lawrie Wilson, captain for the night Leon Cort, and Danny Green, who I hope retains his place on Saturday. There was another goal tonight for Green who managed a few in pre-season and surely he must be allowed three matches to stake his claim.

The night ended on a lovely note that saw Jordan Cousins win a penalty that Joe Pigott (hashtag: Feed the Pig) score from, for his first senior goal. We all hope that this is only the beginning.

And prophetically only yesterday I made the late decision to sponsor the shirt of Simon Church for the season. Two goals for the Welshman on his home debut, hopefully he’ll wear it well!

Powell-ometer: 10 changes with many giving him food for thought. Powelly will sleep a little bit better tonight.
Elsewhere: Brighton took the title of biggest shock losing at home to newly promoted to the league Newport County. Accrington Stanley won at Middlesbrough, Sheffield Wednesday were beaten at home by neighbours Rotherham and Ipswich came a cropper at Stevenage. Birmingham, QPR, Millwall, Forest, Derby, Bolton, Yeovil, Leicester and Burnley all came through tough looking ties whilst Barnsley overcome Scunthorpe on penalties and Bournemouth beat Portsmouth in a tight south-coast derby.
