Up for the Cup

Are we? It has been just one solitary year in six seasons that The Addicks have reached the 4th Round of the FA Cup and I would think that a nice plum 4th Round draw would be very beneficial to the club.

First of all we have to overcome Huddersfield, a team I saw grab a last minute penalty equaliser against us in November. Town have only won once since then, although they have had a number of draws. They got smashed by Leicester last weekend and Simon Grayson may well look to make some changes on Saturday, Powell’s will be more enforced.

Powell has recalled young striker Ade Azeez from Wycombe and he’s expected to feature on Saturday. Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth was very complimentary:

“Ade has been a superb professional. He’s done brilliantly for us in the short time he’s been ours. I’m just upset for him he missed a couple of weeks because of his injury. The attitude he’s got, I can see Ade Azeez going on to big things in the game. It was a pleasure to have him and to give him his first minutes in professional football. He’s definitely a name to remember.”

With Hulse gone, Haynes injured and Fuller probably sitting it out, the Cup game could be a perfect time for the 18-year old to get his Charlton debut. Callum Harriot might also play but I would be a little careful of too many changes after the confidence-busting result at Watford plus the importance of going through.

That has to be the club’s target and a potential draw against the majority of the clubs in the Premier League or a local SE London derby would bring much needed cash and profile. For too many of the previous seasons the league has been paramount but this season, I’d love a little cup run, wouldn’t you?

I am normally a great fan of playing young players, but playing a couple of young players in a game like the FA cup seems to be unfair on the players, and taking the cup game as slightly unimportant. I cannot see how Fuller is being ‘rested’, why was he on the bench midweek?
I would have thought that both of these promising players should be on the bench, and played when it is neccessary. I speak with a certain perspective as well, There was a player called Tamer Tuna who played in the Johnstone’s cup, at home, a few years ago…. scored and never really had another chance in the first team, he is currently serving drinks at David Lloyd’s Gym. Now that may be extreme, but why have so many loanees, if you are going to develop youngsters?. If you are good enough, age does not come into it, wether you are a 40 year old keeper, or a 17 year old……

    Hi Chicago
Just wanted to pop in and say happy new year. Haven’t been here for a while for various reasons and just had a very quick flick down the headlines for your posts – until I got to the one about sacking CP, and then I remembered why I don’t do the internet any more!!! Anyway, I hope you and your family have a brilliant 2013.
I still love the Cup – surely it must be our turn for a run?
