Jonjo picked for England squad

Great to see Jonjo Shelvey selected in the the England squad for the World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Poland, they may almost now be worth watching.

Jonjo has played under four different managers at Anfield including Roy Hodgson who inherited him from Rafa Benitez. Liverpool paid an initial fee of £1.7m but since then a number of £250,000 increments have been received by the club. From memory I also think there was another add-on for an England cap.

We were skint when we sold Shelvey, but it is well known that Jonjo and his family only ever wanted the best for the club including signing an extension to his contract at the beginning of the season we sold him taking it to 2012 and in the way the deal was constructed between Liverpool and Richard Murray.

Often seen at Charlton games, Jonjo was the best young product the club has produced in many a year, a situation that has been addressed by the new owners. Credit where credit’s due. Liverpool despite all of their problems has proved a good move for Jonjo learning under his hero Steven Gerrard and it would be a sweet moment for all of us if Jonjo is Gerrard’s successor in the England midfield.

Roy Hodgson also had some kind words for Carl Jenkinson this past week. Jenkinson has improved dramatically over the summer under the tutelage of Arsene Wenger, but keep it to yourself, there’s a little bloke at The Valley who I think is better!

Agreed, would much rather have Solly at right back instead of Jenkinson.
