Back from Spain

Chris Powell and his squad return to London tomorrow after a week of pre-season work in Spain. I am sure the coaches and sports scientists will pick out other highlights from the trip but the fan’s focus will be on the 1-0 win over Sporting Lisbon on Thursday night in Lepe. I never get very excited about friendlies but they have to generate a winning mentality and Sporting is a considerable scalp.

The only actual transfer target Powell has commented on publicly this summer is Sam Baldock and a host other clubs have also been linked with the Hammers’ striker including Nottingham Forest, Bristol City, Ipswich and Crystal Palace. The jungle drums suggest we have agreed a fee with his club but Baldock wants to stay at Upton Park and fight for his place.

Two other targets Sone Aluko and George Friend are close to signing for Hull City and Middlesbrough respectively. Other new signings being bandied about are Derby’s Steve Davies and Blackburn’s David Goodwillie.

The only person that knows is Chris Powell of course and with him back behind his desk tomorrow we could well see some developments this week, which might include the departures of Paul Hayes and Leon Clarke, the notable absentees from the Spanish training camp.

It is also expected that Jason Euell will be unveiled as the club’s new under 16 coach.
