United or Wednesday?

Do we have a view?

The race between the two Sheffield massives has occupied the media for the whole season. Who would finish 1st and and who would finish 2nd? Well the story didn’t quite end that way as some little upstarts from darn sarf have done a runner with the trophy. However credit where credit’s due as both Wednesday and United have given it a bloody good go, particularly in the latter stages of the season as they chased us down the home straight.

One of the two clubs could finish the season tomorrow night with over 90 points and not get promoted, which says a lot about our poise and unyielding ability these last 9 months.

For the bulk of the season it was United that I preferred. I have an admiration for Danny Wilson, especially after the antagonistic reception he received when he was appointed United manager following their relegation.

Wilson has quietly gone about his business. They were the last team to lead the League One table before we took it over in mid-September and jockeyed for position with Wednesday and Huddersfield. His previous counterpart at Hillsborough though didn’t know how to keep quiet.

Megson was adored by Wednesday fans but loathed by just about everyone else. The Ginger Mourinho’s bating of Powell and his coaching staff at Hillsborough in January was loathsome, his style of play jarring and his personality obnoxious.

Going into the Steel Derby at the end of February a win for the Blades would have given them an 8 point lead over their rivals with two games in hand as Gary Megson’s side stuttered badly. However in front of over 36,000 Wednesday won 1-0 and everything was rosy in that old stadium and it meant that Milan Mandaric had to put away his axe, which he had been feverishly polishing.

Nonetheless three days later and Mandaric couldn’t wait any longer as below us in the table chairmen lost their nerves and took desperate measures in an attempt to keep up with us little Addicks.

I said at the time that Dave Jones was an excellent appointment, and so it has proved with Wednesday not losing in Jones’ 12 games in charge. I have nothing against Jones, certainly nothing against Jose Semedo or April Player of the Month Miguel Llera. Their mostly delusional big club obsessed fans though? Well yes.

On message boards throughout the season the arrogance of Wednesdayites has been amazing, yet Blades fans, with probably a lot more in common with Addicks have been sincere and respectful.

It was no contest who I wanted to go up out of the two Sheffield sides but the Ched Evans court case and the reaction of the sentencing from those same fans, again by no means all, has meant I have changed my position to one where now I really don’t care who joins us in next season’s Championship.

United have slit their own throats as the changing room and the stands deal with the fallout of the Evans case, whilst Dave Jones team continue to collect the wins, except when we needed them to drop a couple at Colchester. Thanks.

If Wednesday miss out tomorrow, then I would back them for the Play-Off’s. If United miss out, which seems probable then I think that will spell another season in the 3rd tier.

United have imploded and they only have themselves to blame, or perhaps 35-goal Ched Evans is guilty of more things other than rape.

Good post, at least you didn’t have to go on the BBC Radio Sheffield breakfast show.

To be fair I’m not all that bothered. Wednesday make me laugh with their delusions of grand u’re. It’s been twelve years since they last graced the top flight of English football. Of those twelve seasons they’ve spent seven in the third tier of English. During the five they spent in the second tier, the closest they got to the Premiership was ninth. Massive!
