Miami heat

Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray produced an excellent final of the Sony Ericsson Open here in Miami this afternoon. In searing heat and high humidity the Serb and the Scot slogged it out for almost two and a half hours producing rally after rally.

The first set Djokovic won 6-1 but that didn’t tell the true story of how close each game was, with most going to deuce. The difference being that Murray was in slight defensive mode and Novak’s assertiveness won him through.

Murray, who had the majority of the neutrals in Crandon Park behind him, improved in the 2nd set and there were many long rallies which brought the 13,000 crowd to it’s feet a number of times.

Both players looked like they were struggling though in the heat, particularly Djokovic but just when it seemed he would almost faint, he produced another killer blow punching the air trademark style as Murray looked at his own feet shaking his head.

The 2nd set went with serve and lasted one hour and forty minutes. As we entered the tie break the Serb was always going to be too consistent and sure enough took the upper hand to end a compelling contest.

It was a fun afternoon, which began for us with a glass of champagne and some people watching as the Miami Latinos mixed with a jumble of accents of which very few sounded American.

We got back to the hotel and took our daughter to dinner at Hillstone in Coral Gables, which was fabulous.

We leave the Miami heat tomorrow to seek snow in Colorado.
