Hurricane Igor update – Sunday 5.45pm

We have had power back for a few hours now, so thank you BELCO for that. 16,000 homes remain without though, which is about half of the island. The power returning caused a bit of a shock as we were all napping at the time and then the various smoke alarms around the house screeched into action. I am sure scurrying up a ladder to loosen wires in the upstairs hallway was not what the physio had in mind yesterday when he told me I could start to put some weight on my foot today!

The winds are now around 100 mph and as I look outside of the kitchen window the rain is coming down sideways and as I type the front door has just blown open and one of the wooden boards on the french doors has come off. We need to move that.

Igor is now just 25 miles from passing the south-west of the island, which should be within the next 2 hours.

This running commentary is very exciting. I have never been anywhere near a hurrican but I strangely feel as though I am ‘sharing’ the experience.

I guess I should really get out more, but either way I shall be asleep soon. I do hope your house doesn’t blow away before the morning. I’ll come by the blog again Then to get the latest.

Glad you have power back. Still have ours. Belco have done an awesome job resoring the early power cuts, but have now been called back to base. Really mental now, the house is moving in the gusts. 1 hr from closest point. Been on facebook to some fellow St Georgians. One has great shots of the largest of the old ferries (The Bermudian)breaking loose from its storm mooring and heading sideways across the harbour!!! Just hitting a bottle of red now. Not much else I can do. Kids are off to bed, if we can get thru next few hours……Good luck mate, stay off those ladders.

Jon – hope you got through it. Was bloody scary and it was only a Cat 1. Think island got away quite lightly but I have to say I was impressed with the organisation.

BELCO did a cracking job, as did Digicel keeping the mobile network going and we listened to Chris Large on VSB all day Saturday giving storm updates from his house with no power. Bernews.com was an excellent source too. Good stuff.
