Rovers and out

Tranmere Rovers 1 Charlton Athletic 1
I got home too late from hospital to listen in to the game. From reading reports it sounded like we got off to a blistering start but couldn’t keep up the pace in the 2nd half and a point was probably fair.

How much we should read into this result after our 4-0 win at Prenton Park at around the same time last season I don’t know. What I do know is it’s proving more and more difficult for me to pass comment on team performances and our prospects for the season as unusually by this stage I haven’t even seen the boys play yet.

So I try not to be a fraud and take my leads from friends and other bloggers but then again hardly any one player is getting a run in the team at the moment and PP is making on average 4 to 5 changes a game. PP calls it “picking teams horses for courses.” I call it not knowing your best team and for me we still look like we are in an extended pre-season.

No bad thing especially in an unpredictable league and with a very long way to go. The players chosen for the bench today tells me that we have enough quality but it is taking time to gel. At some point that excuse will start to wear a bit thin.

I was glad Worner got another chance today. Nothing knocks the confidence of a young player like being dropped for a last minute loan replacement. Waggy too proved that he deserves to start scoring his 3rd goal of the season. Perhaps he can take the strikers training on Monday.

Addicks at Prenton Park:
CA fact: Only one player has started all 7 league games so far – Gary Doherty.

I understand al the reasons for the late arrival of some members of the squad, but I think the reason we are playing like it’s pre season is that we should really have brought all the players in at the end of June.

As late as Watford away we were still playing trialists that were let go.

I’m not complaining, but that does explain why we are not exactly on fire yet. Norwich did the same last season. I’m not suggesting that we will do the same as they did (although that would be nice) but with so many changes this summer we are going to need time to try all the permutations that will, hopefully, find us a winning run.

Thankfully, unlike last season, we don’t have two teams in the division with 19 points from seven games. We have managed to stumble along gelling the team and we are only three points off the to of the table.

I’m very encouraged with the players we have brought in and if you’d offered me three points off the top after seven games I’d have ripped your arm off.

  2. I am with you KHA.

Certainly in this division a blistering start is not necessary to gain promotion and we can afford some on the job training.

I am heartened that you and others have been encouraged by the new signings also.
