Un, deux, trois

A bank holiday for some but not for Parky as he sat in the manager’s office with a big pen and reams of contracts today to sign three players, well officially two. By all accounts Jon Fortune will sign a 5-month contract but as a free agent, tomorrow’s deadline does not apply to his transfer. Rumours suggest that Fortune might even be sent out on loan for a month to gain much needed match fitness.

The summer-long chase for Daggers striker Paul Benson finally ended this morning when he passed a medical and the club paid a total fee of £250,000. The fee was officially undisclosed, because normally it is when it’s considered high but the close attentions of an unnamed Championship club would have certainly driven the price up, as did John Still’s strong stance that he didn’t want his prodigy to leave east London.

30-year old Benson, said to be on £2,000 a week is a gamble, but any young forward from non-league would cost similiar even if that may end up being over a longer time period . Plus you pay for potential. A contracted scorer of 43 goals in two seasons, whatever the level will cost money.

£250,000 is a lot of dosh though given our financial universe, but Benson is proven at the level below us and I don’t necessary think there is the gap in quality between tiers 3 and 4, than there is higher up the pyramid. Conference and League 2 likewise.

Anyway Paul welcome to The Valley. At the twilight of your career you deserve to find some hero-worship and believe me you can find that here, just ask Sir Clive.

The winger/striker Richard Murray promised materialised as Joe Anyinsah. The ex-Carlisle man had been training with us for a couple of weeks, so the club did well to keep that quiet. Anyinsah is a west-country boy but has spent most of his career in the north and had a lot of success for Carlisle and I’d image Greg Abbott was sorry to lose him.

With the addition of Benson and Anyinsah plus Fortune gives the squad instant depth and cover in all positions. Don’t ask me why but I can still see another loan player coming in tomorrow before the 5pm deadline.
