RIP David Whyte
What dreadful news, at just 43-years old, yesterday our former striker David Whyte lost his life after a long battle with depression.
David signed for the Addicks initially on loan in March 1992, and then was signed permanently in a deal that took Darren Pitcher to Palace and Whyte along with Paul Mortimer to us.
It was a cracking deal as I think we also received some cash and Whyte went on to score 35 goals in 106 appearances including some real crackers.
There are a lot of David Whyte memories but my personal favourite was when Leicester came to Upton Park in 1992 expectant of an easy march to promotion, but driven on by a scintillating performance from David Whyte we sent them back to the midlands packing.
We won 2-0 in front of over 15,000, which was a big crowd for us at Upton Park, and I would hazard a guess that half of that crowd were from Leicester.
David Whyte scored this 2nd goal with a sublime finish.
David’s is a tragic loss of life. A local lad that had bundles of natural talent. I hope you can now find peace David.

I remember Leicester having nearer 10, 000 that day than half the crowd. It was a match we would normally fluff but Robert Lee and David Whyte ran the show.
Think in hindsight I was being kind. They were all along the chicken run as well, a couple of pitch invasions too if I remember. I did enjoy that day. Whyte was an exciting player.
I remember a game at the valley against Oldham when we was struggling in the league and he saved the day.
