Rhoys Wiggins sold

I have a lot of time for Rhoys Wiggins. I have been fortunate to be in his company a couple of times, and he is a very engaging, funny and assured young man. Since the Welshman signed for Chris Powell four years ago I have admired his marauding runs down the wing and his ability to get himself out of a hole defensively. He was one of the stars in that promotion season, and I felt he easily adjusted to the higher level upon promotion.

He has had his injury problems though, at both Charlton, and as a young player at Palace. He may have lost a bit of pace, but I still thought he was our best option at left back and at 27 has the experience and valuable knowledge of this league and it’s opposition to still make him a key part of Guy Luzon’s squad.

Best signing of the summer

By far. This morning Johann Berg Gudmundsson put pen to paper on a new four year contract, which sends fans many positive messages after a summer so far of frustration and concern.

From the club’s point of view it shows ambition and no doubt securing the Icelandic on this improved deal did not come cheap. It also means, rightly, that they should get good money for him when it is time to sell.

From Gudmundsson: “We want to build a squad for the future and I am one part of that,” he said. “It is really nice for all of the squad to know that players are sticking around and that we are getting some new signings as well. We know that the football club are serious about what they want to do.”

The Kashi promise

Breaking News! Charlton have announced the signing of Ahmed Kashi. Nope, me neither but I am partial to his cereal.

The Algerian was believed to be the player that the club was hoping to play in Belgium, but instead he will watch tonight’s game against St-Truiden and complete his move on Monday.

Born in the north-east of France, Kashi chose to play for Algeria, the birthplace of his parents, and did represent the North African country at the recent African Cup of Nations. The holding midfielder has been signed from Metz, the Ligue 1 team managed by Jose Riga, who took over after Metz were relegated to Ligue 2 last season. Kashi played 21 times last season scoring once.

Welling already?

A whole week in Blighty and not even a sniff of a new Addicks signing to shout from the roof tops.

From behind the curtain it looks as if Guy Luzon is attempting to manage his budget and his transfer targets within the restrictions imposed on him, and the sale of Standard Liege has not only corked the flow of Belgium imports but actually obstructed them.

Frederic Bulot has been allowed to train and actually play in pre-season friendlies for Charlton but it is thought that Standard are playing hardball in the transfer negotiations, and to add to the obstacles, French club Reims have now joined the fray for the French speaking midfielder.

Back home for the curtain call

I’m flying back to Gatwick overnight and all being well I’ll grab a quick pint in the Oak before we take our seats for the early kick off against promoted Bournemouth before the curtain draws on the season.

After the midweek games somewhat ruined Sky TV’s excitement their cameras will be at Blackburn v Ipswich and Derby v Reading as the Tractor Boys and Rams attempt to hold on to their top 6 places. Personally more excitement might have been found at Brentford and Wolves as they have to win and score goals to force themselves into play-off contention.

Fox Hunt

With Rhoys Wiggins being out for a minimum of 6 weeks with a fractured foot, Big Bob was a little coy on who would takeover at left back in the coming games. Morgan Fox has patiently waited in the wings appearing only at Fulham in the League and in the two League Cup games.

The Welshman may not have impressed as much as he did at the tail end of last season under Jose Riga, but the 21-year old needs and deserves a run of games. Coquelin, Gomez, Solly and Wiggins, even Cousins could probably all fill in there, but I would prefer to see Fox.

I continued my shirt sponsorship this season by contributing to the coffers money I would undoubtedly spend on a season ticket or two if I lived ‘at home’.

This season I’ve selected Welsh left back Rhoys Wiggins as the player to sponsor. It was a difficult decision as more players were available, which follows the pattern of season tickets sales, with fans wary of parting with large sums of upfront money.

Liking the cut of his jib

I quite liked what Bob Peeters had to say today. Sat in between his boss and Richard Murray, Peeters came across as eager, methodical, personable, witty and up for it.

Duchâtelet looked disinterested and was happy for Peeters to answer all the questions, except for the one about the difference between a head coach and a manager, which startled Roland into action. Meanwhile Murray happily jumped in to explain the benefit of one-year contract agreements, still aggrieved obviously, like we all are, at the £1m the club paid to say goodbye to Alan Pardew.

Crazy day down in SE7

Ok, so where do we begin?

Let’s look at those going out. Dale Stephens to Brighton is done, undisclosed of course. Good luck to him, my last personal memory of Dale was his winner at St Andrews.

Yann Kermorgant was back at Sparrows Lane today and I am trying to understand what has gone on before and what can still happen in the next 36 hours. It appears Duchâtelet has offered him a contract extension, but one that Yann wasn’t particularly happy with. He has also insisted that Powell be guaranteed his future too. I wouldn’t think for a minute that the Belgium was very happy with this and with that accepted the £500,000 on offer from Bournemouth.

This has almost certainly been Powell and Duchâtelet’s first clash. The Daily Mail reported earlier that Powell’s future was now uncertain. That is hardly news, and I really don’t think Powell is a quitter.

Team spirit

I had a smashing time at the Charlton Players Sponsor’s Dinner last night. I took a mate as my date and we sat on a table with Danny Hollands and Rhoys Wiggins, two nicer lads it is probably harder to meet.

Wiggins was particularly good, engaging and opinionated. Hollands is more softly spoken but gracious and an everyday fella.

Workmanlike

I can’t really understand the frustrations of some Addicks fans, but then again I have felt strangely detached this season struggling to come to terms with differing opinions and only occasionally being able to form my own as I haven’t seen as many games this season as I did last.

In the absence of transfer funds Powell has, for this division, a workmanlike squad that he has made tough to beat – only 3 times have we lost by more than a single goal and in two of those we were deservedly beaten (Wednesday and Middlesbrough).

The internet jungle drums are banging like the clappers this afternoon with news that Rhoys Wiggins has done a 360 on Watford after they had agreed a fee with Bournemouth and is discussions with Chris Powell about signing for the Addicks, possibly by tonight.
