Booming Brickell

My daughter broke up from school a couple of weeks back and as both the other half and I are working we have to do a lot of juggling and role her around camps for the 10 weeks holiday she gets. Already bored of that, us not her, we’ve decided to take her to Miami for the weekend and then possibly up to the coast to Palm Beach early next week where I am at a conference, or work vacation as my 7-year old calls it!

Taking our 7-year old to Miami of course is a little bit of a ruse and we will eat, shop and people watch well whilst there. But mostly the family all appear knackered, so there will be lots of pool down time.

What would Laurie Abrahams say?

I wonder what Paul Kemsley thinks about Sheik Mansour wading into the American soccer scene waving handfuls of greenbacks? Kemsley, a business associate of Tony Jimenez, has spearheaded the romantic revival of the New York Cosmos and the formation of Mansour’s joint venture with the New York Yankees will be a real blow for the self-confessed Spurs nut and former director.

Cosmos with Pele, Carlos Alberto and Eric Cantona all on the payroll have poured a lot of money into the rebirth of the iconic 1970’s franchise including a proposal for a gleaming new stadium in Belmont Park.

Which makes New York FC’s approval as a MLS expansion team all the more stranger and hurried is they lack any plan for a stadium, something that has been compulsory for other MLS teams. In fact NY FC haven’t even announced a temporary venue, although Flushing Meadows in Queens was named in the press release, it doesn’t appear any more than a suggestion.

The stars align for Galaxy

David Beckham won his first silverware (ignoring various Mickey Mouse cups that are given out willy nilly) last night as LA Galaxy beat Houston Dynamo 1-0 to win the MLS Cup. In fact it was Beckham who started the move for the goal, flicking the ball to Robbie Keane who laid on a nice pass for Landon Donovan to finish with a rare piece of quality.

The game was scrappy but Galaxy had so much room to move the ball around Houston’s final third it was incredible it took until the 71st minute for them to score. Dynamo were on a hiding to nothing and it looked to me like they were just waiting for the inevitable.

Beckham and Galaxy need to win the MLS Cup

David Beckham in all probability will play his last game for LA Galaxy in the MLS Cup Final on Sunday night against Houston Dynamo. Galaxy’s Home Depot Center had already been pre-chosen as the venue for the final and in my mind Galaxy and Beckham need to win the game to justify the progress of professional soccer in the USA.

Sounds ridiculous I know and I would normally not say such nonsense but Galaxy have been the best MLS team for the past two seasons yet Beckham and co and have yet to lift the major trophy in American soccer.

Kelly’s not charmed

I’d almost forgotten about Kelly Youga to be honest. It seems a life time ago he was turning in some sparkling performances (after perhaps finding his level) in our unbeaten run at the beginning of last season.

Some have said that his injury problems were more in his mind than his knee and that he had also taken some poor medical advice back home in France, however according to the club he was back at Sparrows Lane training. No one will be heartened to see his problems compared to those of Cory Gibbs, although Gibbs is now playing again in the MLS for New England.

Let’s face it the club were only hoping to cash in on Kelly anyway in the transfer window, so he was never going to be a key player for us this season but one has to feel sorry for the 25-year old and for Parky, who has stood by him.
