Bulot deal off

Frederic Bulot’s non appearance at Park View Road yesterday confirmed Addicks worse fears that Roland Duchatelet refuses to pay the asking price set by Standard Liege, and the Gabonese international will probably be playing next season in Ligue 1.

It does pose the question of why Duchatelet couldn’t do the deal when he was head of both clubs. I suspect a lack of a clear plan thrown in with some stubbornness by the owner was probably the reason.

A vision of a plan beyond English football being saddled with FFP has never been forthcoming from our Belgium owner and his CEO and 18 months into their leadership nothing much has changed and it has been some time since our SE7 mouthpiece has given us any of her utterances. Maybe this week as the players head of to Belgium maybe a good time.

Welling already?

A whole week in Blighty and not even a sniff of a new Addicks signing to shout from the roof tops.

From behind the curtain it looks as if Guy Luzon is attempting to manage his budget and his transfer targets within the restrictions imposed on him, and the sale of Standard Liege has not only corked the flow of Belgium imports but actually obstructed them.

Frederic Bulot has been allowed to train and actually play in pre-season friendlies for Charlton but it is thought that Standard are playing hardball in the transfer negotiations, and to add to the obstacles, French club Reims have now joined the fray for the French speaking midfielder.

Come in no. 9

Summer signing number three. Palermo’s 6ft 7inch Danish striker was unveiled today by the club on a season long loan. Makienok will wear the no. 9 shirt.

Despite the first impressions of a Thor like tattooed giant, he seems like a nice boy in the video interview and Addicks will be able to relate to that “goosebumps” feeling he had walking into The Valley today. Let us hope he gives a few Championship defenders plenty of goosebumps too.

15 players released

Part one of Luzon/Duchatelet/Meire’s summer transfer strategy was executed today with the announcement of 15 players released.

They are: Tal Ben Haim; Simon Church; Chris Eagles; Roger Johnson; Lawrie Wilson; Oguchi Onyewu; Neil Etheridge; Jack Munns; Harry Osborne; Harry Gerard; Kadell Daniel; Kurtis Cumberbatch; Kieran Monlouis; Rhys Browne; Levander Pyke.

A mixture of the unfortunate attrition of young pros who were unable to step up plus 7 first teamers. My only disappointment is seeing Ben Haim go, although it was apparently his own decision. Not so much disappointed but sad to see Lawrie Wilson and Simon Church move on.

The Welshman scored just 10 goals in Charlton colours, but his work rate could never be questioned, but I expect his career will have to continue down a division.

Lawrie Wilson’s form dipped this season after an excellent 2014/15 season, when I personally thought he was player of the year. He was very friendly with Hamer, Morrison, Hughes and Jackson and an integral part of Chris Powell’s squad but he was sidelined under both Peeters and Luzon and the writing was on the wall. However I am pleased that he was able to come back to the club where he began his career to show us what a great pro he is. Best of luck Lawrie.

Bolton Wanderers 1 Charlton Athletic 1

First of all absolute respect to those 234 Addicks at Bolton tonight. Possibly the most unattractive away game for many a season. I have been monitoring this for a while, and the Football League need to look a bit more carefully at the lay out of the fixtures next season. We have travelled this season to Wolves, Leeds and Blackpool midweek despite a profligacy of southern games.

Another 1-1 draw then, who said a top 12 finish would be easy eh? The game appeared to follow a similar pattern to the game at Hillsborough on Saturday and Bolton dominated the 2nd half, and after Luzon substituted both Igor and Watt, it eradicated the ‘out ball’ and encouraged more pressure with Bolton equalising 11 minutes from time.

Charlton Athletic 2 Nottingham Forest 1

A very impressive result tonight against a team that had won five of their last six and with a very makeshift team, and all of our first choice defenders out.

Wilson, Gomez, Diarra and Fox began at the back, but Luzon sensibly changed it at half-time replacing Wilson who was struggling against Antonio’s pace and trickery. Gomez coped much better at right back and also got forward much more and Bikey, dropped and suddenly in the past fortnight third choice centre-half, also did a good job of steadying the ship.

Frederic Bulot has come back from the African Nations a different player. He scored a Gudmundsson-esque free-kick in the 7th minute after we started well, and then completely against the run of play, the man on loan from Standard Liege fired in from close range to put us ahead again after danger man Antonio had equalized.

Pardew sparks the silly season

And not just down at Selhurst Park where apparently Steve Parish has agreed a £2m compensation with Mike Ashley for Alan Pardew’s services! A marriage made in heaven.

The transfer window opens on New Year’s Day and although it remains to be seen what plans Roland Duchâtelet has for us, the Charlton rumours are rolling in.

The gift that keeps on giving is Andy Delort, signed by Wigan for £3m on summer deadline day in a blaze of self-social media publicity driven mostly by his Dad. It was no secret that Duchâtelet had banked on bringing in the 23-year old from Tours who was joint top scorer in Ligue 2 last season.

In the end, and the Belgian could hardly be blamed, the self-aggrandizing and inflated fee was enough to put the Addicks off. Since, Delort has struggled to make any impact at all with Wigan. Signed by Uwe Rosler, but dropped to the development team, Delort has not even made a matchday squad for the Latics under new manager Malky Mackay. Delort in 8 Championship appearances has yet to register a goal, but has scored 5 for Wigan’s development side against the likes of Morecombe, Walsall and Tranmere.

Talk is that Delort will move to The Valley on loan until the end of the season.

That Charlton spirit

If you watch the players, I think there were five in total, in the immediate vicinity of Igor Vetokele when he smacked our second goal home on Saturday, you would like me have taken great enjoyment watching how every player celebrated the goal. In fact Kyle wrote here that Simon Church almost burst a blood vessel, so wrapped up in the moment he was.

Interesting then the loan signing of Frédéric Bulot from Standard Liege. It is said from the outset he was against the switch. However with his Standard opportunities diminishing he was later convinced of making the move. The photo of him sat in front of a burger and fries was also an unusual way to make an introduction!
