Caretaker

The very best of luck to Jacko tonight.

There has been very few managerial caretakers in my Charlton supporting time. Funny enough the best one hands down was probably Lee Bowyer, the longest caretaker of all – 6 months in total.

Park the coaches

With Bolton’s goalkeeping coach Lee Turner (photo) set to join David Martane on Guy Luzon’s coaching staff we are left to wonder when they will have some more players to coach….

Dougie Freedman & Lennie Lawrence took Turner with them when they left Palace for Bolton in 2012. Freedman knew the 50-year old from when he finished his playing career at Southend United. Turner is Scottish but played his football at Ebbsfleet and Margate before moving into coaching with Southend. Former Addicks favourite Andy Hughes is at Bolton and I would expect gave Turner rave reviews of life in SE7.

David Martane is someone we should know more about, because he will probably one day take over from Guy Luzon as head coach. Let’s be honest, that wouldn’t be a surprise would it? Little is known of Martane, who is just 27 years old, so I took it upon myself to find out about him.

Watford 5 Charlton Athletic 0

What a shambles.

Very few times in my years as a Charlton Athletic fan can I ever predict a result or a performance, because we have always been so unpredictable, save the days of games against Manchester United, or the FA Cup.

However today’s defeat was a dead cert, but despite this 2,024 Addicks spent hard earned money to travel and watch the team they love, and gave the players total backing for the entire game. And this was their reward.

Farcical

“Charlton are disappointed to announce that Guy Luzon will not be able to take charge of the team at Watford on Saturday due to issues with his UK work permit.” (more)

You couldn’t make it up could you.

Will it be anyone else other than Luzon?

I was quite expecting no further comment from the club yesterday, until late in the day Katrien Meire did follow up with comments on cafc.co.uk.

Meire said that the decision was only taken after the game on Saturday, which seems both unlikely and a little too impetuous. I don’t believe her, nor does Bob, especially knowing of recent informed reports from the Israeli media about Guy Luzon, and the fact that Karel Faraeye was at the Cardiff game, but after her comments in the programme on Saturday, I expect Roland Duchâtelet allowed her, a lawyer, to choose her own words.

It doesn’t matter now, what does is who is appointed next as the 4th manager/head coach in 10 months.

Hollands and Hughes

Players contracts has been a topic of supporter’s conversation all season. Charlton won’t be alone in having a scratch squad left after June 1st, and I am sure there will be a record number of professionals available on free transfers.

With the loan players gone, Charlton have 18 players out of contract plus the coaching team of Alex Dyer, Damian Matthews, Karel Fraeye and Jose Riga all contract-less after June 1st.

Today Andy Hughes officially left the club, this on the back of Danny Green and Danny Hollands also moving on, although these two yet to be confirmed by the club.

Charlton Athletic 1 AFC Bournemouth 0

“What gives me pleasure is that it’s happened here in our home, in The Valley.”

Bugger me, as I said after QPR, if there was ever a best way to win a game, then make it in the last minute in front of the Covered End.

It has been an emotionally charged week and if I was there tonight I’m not sure how I would have reacted to Jose Riga’s name being sung by the Covered End, yet equally I feel it is most definitely time to move on.

None of ‘this’ is Jose’s fault, and he has my total backing as I said the day he got appointed. People change, times change, but Addick blood does not fade very easily.

Keefy Peacock’s Red and White Army

Will it be Wise or Wilkins or both or Poyet or Hughton? Eddie Howe moved swiftly up the betting today but I thought he was off to Palarse. Garry Waddock’s currently hot to trot, although Lawrie Sanchez has been declared lame. Steve Clarke’s in the frame too. But what about Zola or maybe we should give Eddie McCreadie a call (one for my older readers that).

But seriously where do they get these names from? Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is 26/1, as is Iain Dowie?! And who an earth are Alex Inglethorpe and John Hughes? No wonder you never meet a poor bookie.

Port Vale announced a new manager today in Jim Gannon and Preston overlooked the pasty looking Parky for the much bronzer Phil Brown, so it won’t be one of those two but wait, Woy Hodgson, Avram Grant, Carlo Ancelotti and Gerard Houllier will be on the job market soon enough.  EDIT: Roy Keane is available tomorrow!

Anyway I am assuming nothing will be announced until after Sunday. Let poor old Keefy face the journos after an 8-0 thrashing eh and then wheel out the new bloke(s). I hope Keefy is made a Life President or something after and Slater and Jimenez make sure they look after the excellent Damian Matthew.

Paul Benson was on Twitter this afternoon saying that Peacock had run them ragged in training. Keith could probably do Benno over 20 yards to be fair.

Anyway wouldn’t it be brilliant if the away end could sing throughout the match at White Hart Lane on Sunday: ‘Keefy Peacock’s Red and White Army’. I’d love that.
