Suffering

Guy Mowbray and Alan Shearer used that word a lot tonight as did the guys in the studio as England’s grip on their opening game threatened to slip out of their hands.

I decided to pour myself a beer after 20 minutes, well it was Father’s Day, but it went a bit flat didn’t it? Not the beer, England’s performance.

It was such a great start, Bellingham is extraordinary, but by the end of the game England were banked around their own box, edgy and grasping for the full time whistle.

I think we caused many of our problems, and I felt Southgate could have nipped that in the bud by bringing on players that are able to play with the ball further up the pitch such as Palmer. Yet, he is not that sort of manager and he will point to the 3 points, and so he should.

Southgate was brave playing Alexander-Arnold in midfield, but I’m not sure I liked that, and Foden is such an England enigma. Bellingham could play deeper, because he can play anywhere, and Foden could move into his role.

Whisper it, but I thought Guehi was very good as was Rice, and Pickford stepped up when required, and then there was Jude.

I think Serbia were decent and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them qualify for the knock-out. They also gave us another ex-Addick at the tournament, Miloš Veljković played three games on loan for us in 2015. I do not remember him at all.

I’m sorry, but there has to be something fundamentally wrong, when your goalkeeper receives more passes, than your captain and record goal scorer…

    Way, way, way too cautious.

Before the tournament began I said England will probably get through the group stage but will lose the first knockout game. After last night I’m sticking by that. Had we been playing Spain/Germany/Italy/Holland we would have been stuffed.

Played well for forty minutes, than disappeared. Southgate clueless as to what to do (as usual) I desperately hope he leaves the job at the end of the Euro’s.

    • I’ve amended it to 2015. Was at the time when Peeters was sacked and Luzon came in. Played three games on loan and then got injured and went back to Spurs.

Did it remind you of a lot of Charlton games. Good for half hour

then the other side worked us , luckly they had no one that could score. Having said that a win is a win.

  6. I watched a live England game for the first time in many years and it confirmed why I stopped watching, same old England, nothing seems to change. What a waste of 2 hours!

I will now resort to my default position and never watch a live England game again.

I said before the competition began. I expect England to get through the group stage, but I also expect them to lose their first knockout game. Nothing I saw last night changes my mind. First 40 minutes we did well. Then turned off. The second half we were hopeless. Southgate had no idea what to do about it (as usual)

I was getting some uncomfortable League One vibes watching that match. For 30 or so minutes we were on top, we scored a good goal but then couldn’t kill the game off against a physical side who weren’t afraid to throw their weight around. Serbia dragged England down to their level and nearly got something out of the match, a few half errors by our defenders fortunately went unpunished.

I’d have brought Conor Gallagher on a bit earlier and subbed off Phil Foden for Cole Palmer around the same time, the former because TAA was having a poor game and we needed to win a bit more in midfield and Harry Kane was being marked out of the match upfront, another forward would have made them drop a defender back and free up some midfield space. Another L1 vibe was not seeing the managers not freshen things up when the opposition go to Plan B.

Still a win in a win and we move on to play Denmark.
