Gary Neville ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ‘

An absolute seminal riposte from Gary Neville today on the leak of the formation of a European Super League ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ‘

Gary Neville’s Sky Sports outburst is below.

This is not anything new, but the lastest leak comes the day before a UEFA meeting tomorrow announcing radical changes to the Champions League. Not good enough for the 12 clubs said to be involved including six from England – Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham. Sorry, but have a couple of them looked at themselves in the table recently?

The other clubs reported to have signed up include debt ridden Barcelona, Juventus and Inter Milan. No clubs from France and Germany interestingly. The suggestion has been deeply condemned by almost everyone, although not as eloquently or passionately as Gary Neville.

As this excellent article suggests this has to be the idea of only those that truly hate sport and everything that sport and competition means.

I just wish they would bugger off to their 24/7 TV channel of playing each other every week, and let the rest of us get on with it. Grass roots football would be reborn.

People have never stopped going to the theatre, even though there is a blockbuster multi-million dollar budget Hollywood movie on at the Odeon.

F them and their JP Morgan money. Take your shiny ball to your monotonous, uncompetitive, money soaked league. Life goes on without you as it has for 150 years.

Makes me laugh to hear the indignation from the Premier League and Neville, one of its products and beneficiaries – as if they arenโ€™t just about money themselves and since the PL came into being how close have any of the โ€œbigโ€ clubs been to relegation? When clubs like Bury have gone to the wall and others like Wigan and us have had disaster looming how many players taking home ยฃ1m a month have offered to take a pay cut and help us out? Let them go form whatever league they want, it wouldnโ€™t bother me, they stopped being โ€œrealโ€ clubs in my eyes a long time ago and their glory-hunting fans are just as bad.

    • Not going to knock Neville who comments on his wealth in his outburst, but letโ€™s watch Sky line up alongside Amazon, Comcast, Disney etc to get their mitts on the TV rights.

Nevilleโ€™s indignation is all about what happens at the top of the tree – donโ€™t remember him saying anything or putting his hand in his pocket when his fellow Mancs Bury (almost) were getting hung, drawn & quartered and I think we have a lot more in common with them than the โ€œbig sixโ€.

Funnily enough, I have no sense of loss.
Without those money grubbing, non-football owners, it will be a breath of fresh air getting rid.

So if this comes to pass why now would anyone invest in a lower league football club (like Charlton)? Honest question. 20 years ago Man City were playing the likes of Gillingham etc. Now they’ve reached the top the ladder is being pulled up after them so hardly one else is going to get there despite wise management and investment. Everyone other club just becomes a feeder for the superleague.

    • It’s a good question. But I truly believe this will give grass roots football a rebirth. Let me ask the question the other way around. Who will invest in the 12 Super League clubs? How many Emirati oil nations or Russian oligarchs are there?

Yet we may see local businessmen invest sensibly in local clubs, and less so dodgy Arabs or Asian ‘businessmen’ whose sole interest is ego and the 0% of chances that they will be the next Man City.

This could kill the EPL as we know it, but L1 and below will I think increase it’s appeal.
