Charlton Athletic 1 Oxford United 1

Didn’t deserve to win that did we?

Very disappointing after Saturday. I was sorry that Bowyer made changes in the name of resting players, albeit understanding why he did. Fosu came back and is misfiring. Maybe the diamond doesn’t suit his offensive style. By all accounts Pratley again did well at the back.

I listened on the radio and it sounded like we lacked bite, and 2nd half when a promotion-forward side should have upped the gas, we just didn’t and fell into Oxford’s trap, who scored a great goal to grab a probably deserved point.

Sounded as if we ran out of patience and went long too early and one little Bowyer gripe.. he needs to make substitutions earlier to change games, not late on to chase or hold them. Thoughts?

Not for the first time at 1-0, we had a great chance when Aribo swiped at an open goal to put us away. Taylor did the same on Saturday, but that was a much less vital miss. Two games three days apart, but such a different performance. Where those at the top – Pompey are 12 points and 10 places ahead of us – are getting results consistently, we are not.

Robinson appears to have changed his style from possession statistic king to scrapping and time wasting king. It worked for him tonight. Ricky Holmes got a mixed welcome and departure. The referee was crap. Nothing earth shattering there.

Sums up the evening.

Addicks at The Valley:
Bow: “Oxford came and made it difficult for us. It worked.”
Elsewhere: Portsmouth were pegged back by Burton at Fratton Park, whilst behind them Sunderland won impressively at Doncaster. Luton were too much for Accrinton Stanley tonight and Peterborough were back to winning ways at home to Fleetwood in front of 5,000 fans. Win of the night was from Shrewsbury who showed last season’s form to beat Barnsley 3-1.

It reminds me of Curbs then C Powell, yes really! pick a player great – motivation /man management great. Making subs when the conclusion is already a formality either way – great and bloody too late mate!
But I guess we usually don’t know the fitness full story.

Yep, I agree about the subs and LB’s ability to make the changes to formation in mid-games, it’s difficult because we lacked the options on the bench to offer something different and we needed something extra in midfield where we were stifled. Getting the subs right has been a weakness of Lee for some time, but it’s the sort of thing that can improve with experience and Billy Clarke has made his first steps back from injury playing 45 mins of an U23 game on Monday. We could have used his nous last night. Oxford set out not to lose, defended well and so arguably they won. Onwards and upwards another point gained at least.

Fosu is a good player but when Taylor and Grant are playing up front he is not the right support option. A creative player like Ward,Marshall,Morgan or Lapslie should play behind the front two, so as Ward was rested Lapslie could have started.I have noticed that Aribo tends to perform significantly better in the first half than the second and Reeves is usually taken off after about 60 minutes so I think the extra midfielder is required. In the games when Fosu has played Grant’s game has been adversely affected. Dijksteel has grown in confidence and the last two games have shown him at his best.
